BB&T has been systematically ripping off its customers by posting debits first, then posting credits or deposit.

This is in stark contradiction to the policies banks, in general, have had in regard to this situation.

Traditionally, banks would post deposits and credits first, usually at 12:00 midnight, then, they would post any debits or withdrawals, summarily preventing unnecessary overdraft charges.

However, in an effort, it seems, to pad their profit margin, they are posting debits first, then posting credits. This new policy, in essence, increases the amount of fees that they collect, as, a lot, if not most people in the lower and middle class have a lower balance when it gets close to payday, or, when we get a winfall and our checking account balance is low, we expect that our deposit will hit the account before any debits.

Also, my wife has her check direct deposited. She is a school teacher. The checks go into the accounts on Thursday. They do not post until after 6:00 A.M. on Friday, again, allowing for fees to be assessed for any debits posted at 12:00 midnight.

It's clear that the banks have instituted this policy to glean more fees from the working class, while leaving the upper class and the well-heeled, virtually untouched.

This practice is an outrage, and if the federal government and state banking regulators won't do anything about it, we the the people, should start taking grass roots measures to rectify this problem.

What reality are you from.No bank has posted credits before debits since forever and a day especially Since Check 21, a process that allows for checks to process quickly? They post debits and credit in chronological order with debits appearing to always turn up first.

$10.00 check comes in at 12:15 on an account with $5.00 in it, NSF Fee. Deposit comes in at 12:16, NSF comes out of it. Hopefully the deposit mines the NSF covers everything else behind it or you'll be hit with NSF fees over and over again. The days of floating payments went out with the dinosaurs.

You can not spend what you don't have. Don't think that you can write a check on Thursday thinking your paycheck will post first. It won't happen and you'll start an NSF fee cascade that will wipe you out. The only solution here is to budget so you can make payments on money that's actually there.

This means don't write a rent check on the 1st thinking your deposit will catch it on the 2nd.

Totally your fault for living in the stone ages. This is the exact reason basic home finance should be mandatory in high schools.

I agree and would like to join grassroots efforts, based the numerous overdrafts BB&T has charged me when deposits and withdraw were within 24 hours of each other, which tells me the timing is intentional. Doug, North Carolina

I have recently been robbed by them over this very issue. They took 573 of my hard earned money in the space of a week.

I am disgusted. I will join any group trying to make a change.

I feel ive been a victim too. is there a number someone can call or an address, e-mail that I can contact ?

Guest

I agree. How can we get a class action lawsuit against them or who can report them to?

This is total BS. I transfer money from one account to another and it shows positive then all of a sudden I have a negative balance. They after they charge you the overdraft fee, they charge you daily until you put money in. If I don't have the money how can I put money in?

Why steal my money BBT, when you created the overdraft fee? This needs to be stopped!!!

I agree

I have a small business. I and my partner specifically requested our account not Be able to overdrawn, however I am currently stuck with $884 in overdraft fees all becuae they posted debits first and then credited my deposits.

My account is -$541.45 and going deeper in the hole every day. I told the manager how our card was to be setup to not be able to overdraft,he said โ€œit is not setup that way in our systemโ€. He said he canโ€™t waive any fees, itโ€™s the governments policy not BB&T!!!! Had they done things in chronological order of how I deposited and purchased I would have around $300 in my account.

My electric is getting shut off I canโ€™t pay rent and I canโ€™t do anything with the checks I have becuase they are made to my business.

They are stealing my hard earned money plain and simple and itโ€™s not right. Someone needs to be held accountable at Bb&t for these practices that are apparently very common!

How are you getting government involved. I run a small business and have been feeโ€™d more than you can imagine by this company.

Just again last night 8/13/2019. At bank to close account. Absurd banking policies. Guy from above that says we need basic finance.

Nice try, MBA here. No itโ€™s their algorithm.

I am a single mother of 2 growing boys and I work hard everyday to make ends meet and live paycheck to paycheck. I had made a deposit into my account to cover a check/debit and then was charged a $140.00 overdraft fee.

When I called to let them know that I had made a deposit the day before, she told me that the debit charges come out first before credits and refused to refund me the fees. I am contacting the consumer financial protection bureau today.

What the most hardest part of this situation was having to tell my son that we couldn't have a birthday party because I didn't have the money. So sad and disappointed.

A teller that had been working there for some time gave me the impression that the bank had a "grace period" for paying bills due to them. Total lie.

My account never overdrew but based on pending transactions they decided to charge a overdraft fee in advance. Only to attempt to build 4 additional fees.

They scheme & try to build logic on how they rip people off. They make their customer service representative sound super extra friendly in a hypocritical sense. :( It is highway robbery the way that they operate & should be investigated thoroughly based on their unethical practices.

I would advise anybody burned by BB&T to contact the consumer financial protection bureau & file a complaint. These crooks should definitely be looked into.

Yes, they suck. They do hold what they want to post on the account.

Happen to me serveral times. Call customer service for getting charge $140 of overdraft fees for the amounts of $.89, 1.82, $5.44 and 3.21. I made the purchases on a friday. Then sunday with drew a $100 knowing that would put me over but I knew I would get charged an overdraft fee of $38.00 for overdrawing my account.

Instead. They posted the other charges I did on friday on monday.

Then charge me the overdraft fee for the purchases when they were clearly made on friday. BBT is a scamming bank.

While being a satisfied customer of BB&T for the last 30-40 years throughout their mergers and acquisitions, I have recently come into a situation with them that riles me to no endรขโ‚ฌยฆ.what should be illegal and customer pillaging of our money that we entrust to them although taken advantage of through Bank Overdraft fees via their รขโ‚ฌหœhome-cookedรขโ‚ฌโ„ข rules of doing business with them at the expense of their customers.

Last week, I received a check for $750 for a business transaction that was written by a customer who banks with a bank other than BB&T. I received a cash amount of $50 and deposited the remaining $700 into my personal checking account. Unbeknownst to me, only $100 was credited to my account that day after the depositรขโ‚ฌยฆ.was told later that the check had to clear the other bank before the remaining $600 could be credited to me in my checking account. I had no idea that was how my deposit would be handled. Meanwhile, some other of my debit transactions was debited against my account immediately the same day and at the speed of light with no waiting of any kind of verification of such charges. As such, my account went to a negative balance immediately that day with Overdraft fees totaling $140. Had my account been credited the same day as my deposit, my account would have never been negative. I asked that my BB&T Branch Manager contact me immediately about the now due $140 overdraft fee that might further cause additional overdraft fees. After waiting several days to discuss this with my BB&T Branch Manager, sure enough, the bank charged me an additional $140 in over draft fees with still no return call to me from the Branch Manager. While waiting for my BB&T Branch Manager to return my call, an additional $105 overdraft fees were charged against my account, now totaling $385 on overdraft fees within 1 week! While waiting on my Branch Manager to return my call, I contacted the BB&T call center, all said that there was nothing they could do to assist me with this issue, and that there was absolutely no one else that I could talk to who had the authority to assist me further, but legal by our governmentรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs existing banking regulations. In other words, they had more control over my money that I entrusted with them than I had for myself and my money. This seems to me to be quite similar to legalized robbery and pillaging of their customerรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs money, with no rights or say about my money in their bank.

In a day and time of technology already in place and even used by all banks regarding debit transactions, why is it that when depositing money into an account, that it takes at least 24 hours to clear a check, while yet, all of my debit transactions occur at the speed of light. Is this made possible for banks to increase the chances that Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขll incur overdraft fees at $35 each, even if some of the transactions are for only $1 at a time? Go figure!

Five years ago, I was a multi-millionaire on paper and a patriotic taxpayer. Today, due in part to banks greed, mismanagement and mis-conceptions, I am now bankrupt, fighting bank foreclosures on 3 properties worth ~1.5 million, and fighting to keep my own personal bank, BB&T, from gouging me from what money I have left.

They BBandt are still at it. They will hold a check for weeks waiting for till my account gets very low, or process it the night before my direct deposit gets put in.

I ordered free checks, they charged me twenty seven dollars for the checks and then over drafted my account. They finally took it off but said we will do this as a one time courtesy ! It was their error not mine.

I had enough in the bank to cover what was outstanding. Is the government ever going to stop these thieves ?
